What makes me unique as a therapist

Hi! My name is Jen Cope, and I'm so happy you're here. I love my work as a therapist and am honored to witness people's highs, lows, and everything in between.

I was privileged to be trained at one of the country's top ten Marriage and Family Therapy programs, the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. While in my program, I worked at an OBGYN office where, as a therapist, I worked directly in conjunction with medical providers to treat the patient as a whole. Maternal and perinatal mental health continues to be some of the most rewarding parts of my job. Because my entire program was in a hospital, I am also skilled in medical family therapy.

I have experience with clients coping with recent life-changing diagnoses of either themselves or loved ones. My thesis, titled "Sitting with Discomfort: A Self of the Therapist Guide to Competently Treat Clients Whose Sexual Styles and Practices Vary from Traditional to Alternative," allows me to see non-monogamy, pornography, kink, and other alternative sexual practices through a clinical lens. While I am a therapist, I am also a fellow human!

My Personal Background

I grew up in both Idaho and Colorado in a Mormon household. I went on a proselytizing mission to Columbus, Ohio, and Curitiba, Brazil. I continue to use Portuguese in my day-to-day life, including therapeutically with Portuguese-speaking clients.I met and married my husband within six months! While I attended BYU before and after my mission, the rigor of the coursework left me feeling extremely depressed. When I quickly became on academic suspension, I transferred to UVU, where I finally found my love of learning, academics, and therapy.

I had my cute son in November 2017, which was not only a medically traumatic birth experience but led to permanent health difficulties. I was diagnosed with severe fibrocystic breast disease, and in May 2022, I had a mastectomy and reconstruction to resolve the condition. I am feeling better than ever! I know what it's like to be a client in therapy and feel like you're talking about the same things repeatedly. I've been in treatment for ten years on and off, and only recently have the initial stuff I went to treatment for fall off of my therapy session agenda. I know it's hard. And I promise to show up for you as best as possible.
